Darling buds of May

Alas, this blog seems to have gone well and truly summer dormant. It is a shame, really, but there is only so much time in the day to do the writing up... But I do promise to manage at least one post during the busy summer month, cross my heart and hope to die :)))

In my humble opinion, May is the loveliest and busiest month in a year for the gardener. There are seeds to sow; seedlings to transplant; plants to move and divide; vegetables to sow and plant (I am seriously lagging behind on this one); lawn to reclaim (each year it shrinks a little, although not as fast as I'd like). And everything looks at its prime - so fresh and lush, no ugly fungal diseases marring plants yet, no pests (although a number of red lily beatles has been sighted already doing you-know-what on the lilies, so some spraying will be in order some time soon to kill off those nasty larvae, which strip a plant of its leaves in a matter of seconds).
And then there is a marathon of unashamed plant shopping.
Talking of which, a week ago I went to my favourite plant fair, which is some 1500 km away. Seriously... It's in Ghent, Belgium (of course, I flew there, what did you think?). And I love it, don't know why.
The plant choice is superb, plants are reasonably priced. Ghent is a very beautiful town by itself, and people are friendly and lovely. And the fair is at the time when everything is dripping with wisteria blooms - magnificent.

And yes, I brought the plants back packed in suitcase. The bounty is not bad at all - some 50 plants, including some gems: Baptisia 'Purple Smoke', Thalictrum 'Black Stockings' and 'Splendide', Veronicastrum 'Erica', to name but a few. I know it may sound silly, going to such excesses, but, oh well, things we do for love.... And it's the best holiday ever for a gardener.

So, anyway, at the moment I am busy with planting them. And plenty of other plants and seedlings, that I've raised, bought, got on exchange from fellow gardeners. But in a meanwhile there plenty of other garden pretties to show. And it is very heard to choose which are the worthiest of the lot :)
The Paeonia rockii are in flower: I have them in white, pink and fuchsia, but the reigning queen (or is it a king?) is 'Yeguangbei'. It is one of the few P.rockii cultivars, considered to be black. Well, it is not really black, but a nice rich purple. And very fragrant. I am looking forward to when in some 5 years time it will turn into a magnificent specimen...

And here is one of my favourite garden plants - Dicentra spectabilis 'Goldheart'. I suppose one could call its colouring blatantly vulgar, but, well, that's me for you. I simply love it. And the feeling seems to be mutual, for it is in the best of health, looking quite radiant (if a bit eye-watering acid yellow :)
The next one of the shocking pink squadron is Geranium cinereum 'Signal' from my last year's shopping trip to Ghent. A very good, strong growing plant.

And the last for today is Heucherella 'Stoplight'. Come to think of it, they all have someting in common :) Yes, yellow/lime green foliage with some pink or purple to tart it up. And here it is with the aforementioned Dicentra spectabilis 'Goldheart' and Paeonia suffruticosa 'YashioTsubaki', which has a very distinctively purple-flushed foliage in early summer, in the background.
And to finish it off, yesterday I managed to squeeze in Hosta 'Rainforest Sunrise' (a gift from a generous garden friend). Now, if you are familiar with hostas, you'd know that this is one of the most perfect hostas ever introduced. I don't know about you, but for me this is a perfect plant combo for the shady spot..

So much for today, I'm off... Talk to you next time, probably when herbaceous peonies kick off their show, which looks just around the corner, seeing as Paeonia tennuifolia and Paeonia officinalis are already in bloom. In a meanwhile, happy gardening to you all :)

No peace for wicked...

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... I am already beginning to wonder how am I going to find time for blogging with so many things to do outside. And inside too... Here is one of the culprits for me being away from the computer: trays and trays and trays of seedlings... And I must confess, that by mid-summer a decent portion of these seedlings usually make for a compost heap. For various reasons - too many of them, not enough space to plant, too late to plant... But this year I've promised myself that I'll be sensible, and keep only 10 or 20 seedlings of each kind (well, this multiplied by some 30 is still quite a few, but here is hoping...)

And now lets move to more exciting things - some spring colours. The species tulips started flowering, and how is that for some spring colour? I know, they are quite small, but it is not really the size that matters, is it not? (I am still talking about plants, of course, what did you think?:) Small as they are, they still pack in a punch. The first tulip is Tulipa praestans 'Fussilier' and the other is Tulipa humilis 'Lilliput' (I have to think of some grey foliage foil for these cranberry-coloured gems for the next spring, Veronica incana 'Silbersee' perhaps?). And these are not the tiniest tulips I seem to be growing this year - some are still to flower, and they are soooo tiny. I can see now I've planted some of them in a wrong spot, they should be somewehere in the rock garden or something...

I have also developed a liking for Corydalis. I am still quite new to them, but some of them seem to be doing alright in my garden so i might consider adding to the collection (even more so because I know a good source of them here, in Lithuania, and they are dirt-cheap, comparing to what they cost elsewhere in the world). I had some beautifull ones flowering - C.fumariaefolia (blue-flowered), C.solida 'Blushing Girl' (pink), C.solida 'George Baker' (crimson).
And then there is Corydalis shanginii - what a stunner... First to flower, and still going strong after the rest of the bunch retired. Thriving in sandy, dry, sun-scorched locations, a true workhorse of a plants.

The reason why I thought I'd try growing Corydalis is that I love Dicentras, and they are related. I normally prefer the smaller type of Dicentra, such as D.'Stuart Boothman' (pink flowers, grey foliage), but this one definitely makes into my top 10 - Dicentra 'Goldheart' .
It loooks like the ubiquitous bleeding heart, but the yellow foliage makes huge difference. It is stunning from the moment it unfurls its leaves, till the very end. Lovely leaves, which start as orangey-yellow, truning chartreuse later, and shocking pink dangling flowers. Well, I am told that some people find the combination of yellow leaves and pink flowers alarming, but not me :)

And the last, but not the least, my favourite group of shrubs - elders. Their colourful cultivars, to be more precise. They start spreading their charm from the moment their buds burst, looking like tiny sea creatures. And later they develop colourful foliage, and carry on the show well into the autumn. Well, to be honest, this one particular cultivar, Sambucus racemosa 'Plumosa Aurea' tends to burn in bright sunlight. But there is a better plant, S. 'Sunderland Gold', which is less susceptible. And then there is S. 'Black Lace', which is probably somewhere at the top of my Top 10 list (but I have to do a post about it sometime later, so numerous are the things I'd like to say about this brilliant plant).

Well, that's all, folks :) I am off to do something useful in the garden, and it looks that spaying some nasties (weeds) is the order of the day. Hope to be back soon to write some more about the joys of gardening ...

Lelija 'Courier'

Dar viena puiki LA (Longiflorum x Asiaticum) lelija - 'Courier'.
Labai galingai auganti, daug žiedų sukraunanti veislė. Pradžioje žydėjimo būna ganėtinai ryškiai žalsva. Todėl šią veislę geriau auginti tokioje vietoje, kur popiečio saulė jos nekaitintų. Nors šiaip azijinės ir LA lelijos geriausiai auga saulėkaitoje, tokie subtilūs atspalviai labai greitai išblykšta, deginami saulės.
Kadangi sukrauna daug žiedų, žydėjimas labai ilgas. Tikrai gera ir rekomenduojama veislė pastelinių gėlių mylėtojams.

Sodo akcentai - 3

Kartais sukurti sodo akcentui pakanka vien panaudoti spalvas, kurios gal ir nevisai įprastos sodo aplinkoje, tačiau gerai parenkant tinkamus augalus, leidžia sukurti spalvingas kompozicijas.

Vietos parinkimas. Pirmas žingsnis, kuriant prerijų sodą, yra vietos parinkimas. Prerijų augalai – tiek žolės, tiek daugiamečiai žydintys augalai lengvai prisitaiko įvairiose augimvietėse, tačiau juos visus vienija saulėkaitos poreikis. Prerijų augalai gali augti tiek molingose, tiek smėlingose dirvose, ir nėra jautrūs nei dirvos rūgštingumui, nei derlingumui.

Prerijos paprastai skirstomos į 3 tipus: sausos, drėgnos bei šlapios. Sausų bei drėgnų prerijų augalai labiau mėgsta purią gerai drenuotą dirvą, šlapių vietų augalai gerai auga užmirkusiose dirvose, kur mažai kas gali augti. Netingėkite pasidomėti pasirinktų augalų poreikiais - pats gražiausias augalas, pasodintas netinkamoje vietoje, jus gali nuvilti.

Planavimas. Parinkus tinkamą vietą, jūs tikriausiai norėsite nusipiešti augalų sodininmo planelį. Keletas patarimų:
- parinkite tinkamus augalus pagal dirvožemio tipą: sausos, drėgnos ar šlapios augimvietės augalus.
- parinkite augalus, tinkančius pagal dydį jūsų planuojamam užsodinimo plotui.
- sodinkite augalus bangomis, o ne tiesiomis linijomis – galutinis vaizdas bus natūralesnis.

Sodinimas. Apsodinti suplanuotą preriją galite tiek pirktiniais, tiek savo iš sėklų išaugintais augalais. Jei norite apsodinti didelį plotą, ekonomiškiau būtų bent jau dalį augalų sėti pačiam; jei norite greito rezultato, augalus pirkite. Šiuo atveju bus lengviau ir kovoti su piktžolėmis, kurios, be abejo, bandys rasti sau vietą jūsų prerijų sode, kadangi sodinsite jau paaugusius stiprius augalus.

Bet kuriuo atveju, vieta, kurioje planuojate sodinti savo preriją, turėtų būti švariai išravėta ir paruoštą sodinimui. Galėčiau dar pasikartoti kokius 3 kartus - pasistenkite švariai išravėti, ypatingai daugiametes piktžoles, ir svarbiausiai - daugiametes varpines piktžoles. Sunkias dirvas reiktų palengvinti smėliu ar žvyru, smėlėtas skurdžias dirvas galima pagerinti organinėm medžiagom, tačiau persistengti nereiktų – dauguma dekoratyvinių žolių praranda savo formą ar netgi spalvą per daug trąšioje žemėje.

Delphiniums ex New Zealand

A short while ago I posted a picture of a greenish delphinium, that I have raised from seed, which came from from New Zealand, from these great delphinium breeders Dowdeswell's Delphiniums.

And straight away I received a thank-you message from Terry, the owner of the nursey, thanking me for enjoying their plants sufficiently to write about them. This is very very kind of him. But , hey, what's not to like about THESE delphiniums? just check out some of the lovelies...

Anyway, my story with these New Zealand's delphiniums goes like this. A couple of years ago I've bought from them a couple of packets of seeds, and they were generous enough to include a bonus packet of mixed delphinium seeds.

The seeds were quick to geminate and I ended with 100+ seedlings (I never expected them to germinate almost 100 percent). So I've planted most of them out, and here is what I've got. Not too bad, I'd say :) for a summer's work. They all are pretty tall, but very robust; the flowers are densely packed. Last summer when these delphiniums where in the peak of the flowering, I made a giant bouquet of them together with some lime-green flowers of Lady's mantle - and it truly was spectacular (even if I say so myself). Shame, I didn't take the picture. But I hope I will be able to reproduce it this coming summer.
And this one is the primadonna of the lot - you'd probably agree on that one.. It is absolutaly exceptional. It is also more compact than its brethren, and more prone to mildew. But who cares about such minor problems, when facing a gem like this... I am lucky enough to have a couple of these plants, and I certainly will be propagating them...
So once again, thank you all, at Dowdeswell's Delphiniums, and keep up your good work :)

A little hint - about this time of year they collect fresh delphinium seeds down under, I think, so this is the perfect time to get some freshly harvested delphinium seeds and raise some of these statuesque beauties ;-)
